I have been, since birth, a Philadelphia sports fan. I grew up watching the Phillies and Eagles especially. I have also been a Sixers fan since I was 12, I had to spend a six month period deciding between the Celtics and Sixers and ultimately kept my city allegiance.
Now what does that say about me? Well, I have seen much excitement over 29 years, and more than that I have seen heart ache. Philadelphia had one of sports dubious titles, of all of the cities with all four sports professional teams they had the longest drought without a title until this last year. The entire town had gone 25 years without a sports title until this past year when the Phillies won the world series. Through it all I have been a true follower of Philadelphia sports. I will drive my wife crazy because even when the Phillies are down 10 runs in the bottom of the ninth with one out left, I have to watch the final out because they could come back. Also I kept my daughter up to experience a couple innings of the world series, because the last time the Phillies won it I was one. Yes I have been a true follower, never willing to give up on my teams. In fact I spent much of Monday in mourning over my beloved Eagles.
You see there is a difference between a fan and a follower. Sports people know that fans are fickle and many are fair weathered fans. In fact with the Phillies winning last year many will pledge their allegiance to them until they have a losing season again.
But a follower will watch and root and even mourning with their teams when they lose.
So which are you when it comes to Jesus Christ? Are you a fan who has always been impressed with Jesus and his style? Or have you, like the Disciples did, dropped your net and followed him?
This past Sunday we looked at what it means to be renewed by God’s spirit. Focusing on Isaiah 40:27-31 we looked for our rest in the Lord.
I have become extremely convinced that a large number of people in the United States are on a collision course with death. For some it is how they eat, for other it is the bad habits that they have acquired. But for many it is nothing more than how they work. “Then He told them, “the Sabbath was made for man and man for the Sabbath.” (Mk 2:27) Have you found your rest in Christ? Or are you on a collision path with a short life? God created into the world the idea of the sabbath, it is a time that we may be refilled with the grace and strength that we can only receive through Jesus Christ.
Go ahead, you have my permission get some rest!
